By default, students in a Canvas course can only view but not create Panopto recordings. However, if the course instructor creates an assignment folder (a subfolder of the Panopto Recordings course folder), students can record and manage their own Panopto sessions and upload them to the course assignment folder. By default, student recordings uploaded to the assignment folder are accessible to the instructor and TA, but not other students. Instructors can change the default setting to allow students to view each other’s recordings. To create a video assignment in Canvas, please follow the steps explained on the support page

The VU privacy statement for Panopto
The VU has a contract and a data processing agreement with the supplier. These contain all kinds of provisions that prohibit the supplier from using personal data of VU employees and VU students for their own purposes (such as reselling). There are also a variety of security agreements in the agreement about when employees of the supplier may view data (almost never) that enters the application and what the supplier must do to minimize the chance that third parties can view or change data.
Privacy statement (TO BE UPDATED) Links to an external site.- In principle, the advice is data minimization. Teachers are advised not to record or store data if it is not strictly necessary and to only share data which is essential for lessons.
- Teachers must therefore carefully consider in advance whether they only stream a lecture 'live' or whether teachers can make it plausible that the lessons/lectures/meetings must be made available for later use. Teachers must inform students upfront if they want to record a session. Teachers further have to obide the following rules:
- have a clear goal why the recordings need to be made;
- make clear that students who do not wish to be recorded should make themselves invisible by muting the microphone, switching of the camera and not engage in the chat.
- make clear how long the recordings will be retained;
- make clear how the recordings are protected and who gets access to it;

- This is in particular of importance when online lectures or online working sessions deal with sensitive or controversial issues. And this can be the case quite quickly:
- For example in case of statements that express negative opinions (or positive opinions for that matter) of certain regimes or controversial issues.
- For example if you have students in your course that come from a country in which they or their family might be in danger if unfriendly governements or groups know the whereabouts of them.

- The fact that the official 'recording function' is turned off in some systems for users does not mean that it cannot be recorded in any other way (e.g. via a mobile phone). Then make sure as a teacher to inform all participants that making recording in all forms is prohibited.
- As a final advice, as a teacher you could settle in your course to promote a Neutral Point Of View like Wikipedia and only present the different viewpoints accurately without endorsing one viewpoint over the other.
