Video
Panopto is the standard video platform in use at VU Amsterdam. It is offered to all employees. With Panopto, teachers have the ability to upload video recordings, create screen and webcam recordings, automatically add subtitles and to share these in a course or elsewhere. Teachers can assign video assignments to their students, create video quizzes and use video to illustrate their content.
Use of Panopto is fully integrated in Canvas, but Panopto can also be used outside of Canvas through its own website https://vu.cloud.panopto.eu/ Links to an external site..

The video below shows a good overview of the different functionalities. Use the chapters to easily navigate.
How to embed a Panopto video in Canvas pages?
With Panopto, videos can be embedded anywhere in the Canvas LMS and played back on-demand on any laptop or mobile device. From any embedded video, students can easily access search, the table of contents, notes, or discussion. Students may also choose to open an embedded video in the full interactive viewer if needed.
You may embed a Panopto video anywhere in the course where you have access to the text editor such as Pages, Announcements, or Discussions. Navigate to the area where you would like to embed a video and choose to make a new item. Next, select the Panopto icon, next to the plug icon.
- To choose an existing recording, browse or search through your available folders. Select the video to embed and choose 'insert'.
- To upload an existing video file (i.e. MP4, WMV, MOV) click Upload. On this page, drag and drop the video or audio files you wish to embed or click to browse your computer for files. Next, select 'insert'.
- Select the Record tab to launch Capture or the desktop Panopto app to record directly to the course and course folder. You can use the browser application Capture to record in your browser. Create your recording and select 'insert'.
How to add Panopto to a module?
First, go to modules.
To the right of the module you want to add a Panopto video link in, select the Add icon, which appears as a + plus symbol.
The Add Item window will appear. Expand the dropdown menu to the right of Add and select External Tool.
Select Panopto Video from the list of external tools .
In the Link Resource from External Tool window that appears, you will see the embedded video selector, where you can choose an existing video from your Panopto folders, upload a video, or record a video to add to the course. This works the same as described above in Pages.
Use 'Panopto Video' from the Canvas menu.
Another way to use Panopto in Canvas is by clicking the course tool Panopto Video in the menu. This will create a Panopto folder in Canvas for your course. In Panopto, all videos are organized into folders. When you open the course tool, you are taken directly to the folder that is automatically set up to store the videos for your course. This folder is shared with everyone enrolled in the Canvas course. Instructors have access to create, modify, and share videos. Students only have access to search for and view videos. To share a video with students enrolled in the class, add it to this folder.
Please note: If you use this option, and use a normal link to the Panopto Video e.g. in a page, students first need to click Panopto video in the menu and access the application and folder once. By doing so, they are given access to the folder. If they don't do this, they will probably see a message to "request access" to the video. This applies for every new Canvas course.
If you embed a video using the options described below, this does not apply.
Use the 'embed' functionality.
You might have seen a public video on Panopto that you wanted to use in your Canvas course. However, because you did not have creator rights to the video, you could not embed the video to your Canvas course. By changing the embed code, you can easily add any public video to your course. You can use the embed code below and add the ID.
You can find the ID by going to the video in Panopto, and copy the ID from the weblink. This looks like this: https://vu.cloud.panopto.eu/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=85a13bdc-f8c3-4367-bf0d-b1e600aca57d
The last part of the link, that starts with 'id=' is the ID of the video.

How to Create a Video Assignment for students in Canvas
By default, students in a Canvas course can only view but not create Panopto recordings. However, if the course instructor creates an assignment folder (a subfolder of the Panopto Recordings course folder), students can record and manage their own Panopto sessions and upload them to the course assignment folder. By default, student recordings uploaded to the assignment folder are accessible to the instructor and TA, but not other students. Instructors can change the default setting to allow students to view each other’s recordings. To create a video assignment in Canvas, please follow the steps explained on the support page.
