Grades

Grades can serve as a communication tool between instructors and students and allows instructors to track the progress of students. The Gradebook stores all information about the graded elements (graded Assignments, graded Discussions, graded Quizzes, and graded Surveys) that have been published in a course.

You can use a Notes column in the Gradebook to keep track of extra information in your course, such as general student notes. The Notes column is not visible to students.

Weighing Grades

To use Canvas to calculate the final grade, you can use assignment groups. Selecting this option assigns a weight to each assignment group, not to the assignments themselves. Within each assignment group, a percentage is calculated by dividing the total points a student has earned by the total points possible for all assignments in that group.
For example, an assignment group includes two assignments of both 10 points, and a student’s scores totaled 16/20 points. If this assignment group counts for 30%, and there is another assignment group which counts for 70%, where the student scored 7/10 points, the final grade will be calculated as follows: [(16/20*0,30)+(7/10*0,70)=7,3].
Read more about using assignment groups in the Guides Links to an external site..

Important: please be aware that for privacy reasons you should not publish a document or PDF in Canvas which allows students to see the grades from other students! The Canvas Gradebook is not the official channel to publish final grades; final grades are published through VU.nl.

If you want students to know their (written) exam results, before it is published on VU.nl, you can upload the grades in Canvas. You can enter/upload the grades in two different ways:

You can export the grades from Canvas and import them into VU.nl.

NB: The Total Score displayed in the Gradebook reflects each student's score at the time of viewing, taking into account whether the instructor has hidden assignment scores Links to an external site., assignment due dates, etc. The CSV download includes read-only columns for current and final scores. Current score reflects the total while ignoring unsubmitted assignments, and the final score counts unsubmitted assignments as zero Links to an external site.. Assignments with hidden scores are unposted grades and shown in separate columns for unposted current score and unposted final score, respectively.

If you want to override the final score, for example to correct for a resit, you can use the final grade override feature. More information about this feature can be found here.
