Final grade override functionality

The Final Grade Override allows you to enter a final grade for students that is different from the Total column automatically calculated by Canvas in the Gradebook. You can only enter a percentage. The percentage is retained as the override score.

Students can view the overridden grade in their Grades page. However, students will not know the score has been overridden.

How to use the final grade override functionality?

1. Turn on the functionality in the feature preview settings (Settings--> Feature preview--> Final grade override)

2. In Grades, click on the cog wheel in the top right corner, then select Advanced -> Allow Final Grade Override

3. See the Canvas instruction on how to override a students' final grade Links to an external site.

When to use the final grade override functionality?

Use the final grade to correct for:

  • conditional grading: sometimes a student has to complete an assignment to get a final grade. This way you could correct that.
  • for resits: in Canvas you are not able to select the last result. In case you want to use the last result, this is a way to correct it.

Final grade override functionality

What to consider when using the final grade override functionality?

  • The functionality does not work for 10-point scales, only for percentages. Extra attention when entering the correct percentage is therefore advised.
  • If you want to overwrite partial grades, this functionality is not suitable. It is only possible to overwrite the final grade.
  • The teacher continues to see two columns in the gradebook: Total and Override. In the CSV export, you will see an extra column called Override. The student, however, only sees the grade in the final grade override column. The student, however, only sees the grade in the Override column.
  • If a final grade is overwritten for only a few students in a cohort, the other students will see the original final grade.
  • When a grader, such as an instructor or TA, enables the Final Grade Override option, the Override column displays for all graders in the course. Likewise, the Override column will be hidden if disabled by another grader in the course.

Special attention when exporting the gradebook:

  • A gradebook export shows an extra column called Override
  • The scores in the column 'final grade' are the original scores and will not be affected by scores in the column Override.
  • When uploading your grades to VUnet Resultaat Registratie (VRR) via a gradebook export, make sure you enter the correct final grade for all students in the Override column and select that column to upload to VRR.
