From home you can work on two VU linux servers, to run your python scripts. The servers available are pcoms001 and pcoms002. For security reasons, you need to login via a stepping stone: ssh.data.vu.nl

From linux or mac, you can access these servers via a terminal by typing:

$ ssh [usr110]@ssh.data.vu.nl

$ ssh  pcoms002

From here you can also see your VU home directory.

If you use windows, you also need to install a local ssh and sftp client. Via this client you can first login to ssh.data.vu.nl, and then, in the terminal login via:

$ssh pcoms002

ssh clients for windows (for getting a terminal): PuTTY

scp/sftp clients (for transferring files between the server and you local system): FileZilla, Cyberduck (mac)

You also need a nice editor for Python: Atom

Finally you need to transfer scripts between your local system, and the pcoms server, before you run it.

SSH with PuTTY

Download and install PuTTY (www.putty.org)
Start PuTTy
On the top-left, select "Session". Paste in the "Host Name (or IP address)" field: [usr110]@[IP of virtual machine]; here [usr110] is your vunet id, and [IP of virtual machine] is 'ssh.data.vu.nl'
Under "Saved sessions" enter a name, like “VU login”, then click "save" on the right.
Select the saved session you created and click "load" on the right, then click "Open" on the bottom

If you have trouble, please take your laptop to the practical sessions. Preferably at the start of the course.
