Modules (ESSENTIAL)

Consistency is of utmost importance for student appreciation of Canvas courses.

To facilitate this, we highly recommend a module structure for your courses. You can choose to use a module for each week of your course, or structure the course by the different subjects. This way, students will be able to easily obtain an overview of the course.

Modules allow you to organize your content to help control the flow of your course. Modules are used to organize course content by weeks, units, or a different organizational structure that works for your course. With modules, you are essentially creating a one-directional linear flow of what you would like your students to do.

Each module can contain assignments, quizzes, files (documents or media), content pages and/or discussions. You can also add text headers to structure your module, see module 3 for an example of the use of text headers. There are two ways to build your module structure:

  • You can create new items within the modules. You can edit them and add content later.
  • You can easily add items to your module that you have already created or imported in the course, such as quizzes.

Course content can be added to multiple modules or iterated several times throughout an individual module. Modules can be easily organized using the drag and drop feature. Elements within the modules can also be reorganized by dragging and dropping.
