Creating Canvas groups for organizing max. 75 students attending lecture on campus

First, to allow students to see the groups functionality, enable the People menu in Canvas. See this Links to an external site.page for instructions.

To organize lecture attendance for your students with the Canvas Groups functionality, we suggest multiple options:

1. Self sign-up per week. Every student (depending on the amount of lectures per week) is able to sign-up for on campus attendance for one lecture per week. Other lectures that week should be followed online.

In case you have more than (3*75=) 225 students, to provide an equal opportunity for all students to attend a lecture on Campus, you can add a group to the groupset with lecture number 4, 5, 6, etc. Note that a student can only sign-up for one group per groupset.

2. First come first serve. The first 75 students that sign-up for the lecture can attend the lecture on campus. Other students join online. Every week at a fixed time you open the registration for the next lectures.

3. Fixed attendance. You (automatically) assign 75 students per lecture to attend on Campus. Other students join online.

Keep in mind:

If you have multiple groupsets in your course, please advice students to use their computer to sign-up for the right group. The Canvas student app is not that user friendly when selecting the right group in large amount of groupsets.
