The use of video has become an indispensable part of education. Knowledge clips are known as an effective and useful tool to enrich education. These clips help students to better understand, process and apply the newly acquired material. In addition, knowledge clips engage and activate students, it literally keeps them focused. Several study programs, such as psychology and biology, are (already) using these types of assignments in their education. Students are enthusiastic about them and indicate that they see the added value of them. For example, one student says: “The most valuable thing about this assignment was definitely structuring knowledge and increasing understanding of a number of topics in genetics. This helped me to remember the information for the exam. Secondly, I learned how to use different video and audio tools to create a knowledge clip.” Another student says: “The material I had to learn for that assignment still stays with me, I remembered a lot. In addition, this assignment helped me a lot to think creatively, a skill that is often lost at university.” Although students indicate that they see a lot of value in the assignments, students also indicate that they need better guidance during such an assignment. For example, the structure of the course could be improved, the assessment, the communication and the guidance regarding making and editing the video.

These are all points that we hope to address in our toolboxes. The organizational toolbox will provide an overview of what you need to consider if you, as a teacher, want to implement such an assignment and how exactly you do that. What practical matters do you need to take into account in the preparation? Are there any rules from the VU that are important to observe? How much time does such a project take? This is what the pages of this toolbox will be about. Other modules that have been created to support the process are the educational toolbox and the media toolbox. The educational toolbox will provide support regarding the assessment of the final product and the formulation of learning objectives. In addition, the media toolkit provides support to students and teachers in everything related to the video creation process.
