Tips for teachers on how to present the ‘engagement and deep focus tips’.

  1. Send the tips to the students or place them prominently in your canvas course. Indicate that you will discuss the tips in the first lesson.
  2. The first meeting (tutorial/lecture) will set the tone. If many students have their camera on during this first session, chances are they will continue to do this during the rest of the course. Therefore, schedule time to discuss what you expect from students and to point out the importance of the engagement and deep focus tips.
  3. To have students turn on their camera, you can do the following:
    1. Students want to interact. Explain that visibility of facial expression and environment contributes to this interaction.
    2. Indicate that if students are visible to you as a teacher you are able to see if they understand the content and that this will improve their learning.
  4. Configure your Zoom settings in a way that everyone automatically enters the meeting with his / her camera on (unless they choose to join without video). To do this, go to the zoom settings Links to an external site. and choose the setting below. setting video auto on.jpg
  5. Discuss with your students how they can ask questions (via chat, audio or hand raise). This in addition to the ‘engagement and deep focus tips.’
  6. Adjust the tips to your needs. It is a word-file, so you can choose to add or remove specific parts.
