New: adding your pronouns in Zoom
Recently, a new feature has been added to Zoom: the possibility to add pronouns. There are no preset options, which means you can add, remove or change pronouns according to your needs. Within this feature, there is the option to indicate if the pronouns should be shown every time or if this should be asked before each meeting. The feature is especially important for transgender or non-binary students and employees, who might experience being misgendered on Zoom (for instance, being referred to as ‘he’, when using ‘they’ or ‘she’ pronouns). VU Amsterdam should be an inclusive work & study environment for all students and employees. We therefore encourage everyone to share their pronouns on Zoom, so sharing pronouns becomes the norm rather than the exception.
How to alter this on Zoom?
- go to the Zoom Links to an external site. page of VU Amsterdam and click “Sign in”
- Log in with your VU details
- Left-click on your profile
- Click on the upper section, right and click “Edit”
- Adjust your pronouns in the section below you display name and choose when you want this to be visible
- Make sure you have the newest version of the Zoom-client installed!
The suggestion to add this feature has been brought forward by VU Pride, the network for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA+) students and employees of VU Amsterdam. VU Pride was contacted by a student for this suggestion and has contacted the IT department of VU Amsterdam, who swiftly offered their assistance. Any more suggestions to make? Please send them to VU Pride.
