Typical use-cases
Wilfred Rubens, a well-know blogger and researcher into blended learning, described his typical uses-cases.Activating prior knowledge
For example, I use multiple choice or open questions to see what participants already know about a particular aspect. Checking whether the content has been understood After a short instructional session, I use multiple choice questions to process the content.Ask questions during a session
You can give participants the option to ask questions during a session using Mentimeter. Mentimeter is used as a back channel. In virtual classroom sessions you usually use the chat for this. But during physical meetings Mentimeter works well for this purpose. This probably also depends on the setting and your target group.Brainwriting
I use open questions to make an inventory of, for example, ideas for teaching methods or which learning technologies participants are already using. With a large group of participants, this leads to a lot of contributions. With a group of about 25 participants, this remains manageable. I use the Word Cloud to a much lesser extent. I have the impression that participants quickly opt for the answer that is given the most. It is also often difficult to express yourself in one word.Starting discussions
You can present participants with statements, let them divide 100 points (what are the most important actions to boost the implementation of blended learning?) or let them take positions via the 2×2 grid. In the latter example, you might ask about measures to combat the shortage of teachers. You then have these measures scored on cost and impact, for example. You can then have a discussion about the results.Quiz as a conclusion
At the end of a session, I ask the participants a number of questions about the content of the session. The person who answers the questions the fastest, wins.Exit ticket
You can also use Mentimeter's open question option to take stock of the most important thing participants learned and what questions they still have on the subject.Mentimeter has even more possibilities. For example, you can also use content slides or create a simple form. I don't use those myself. It is important to think carefully about the purpose of the question/statement and its content. Three choice options are often sufficient, and avoid negative choices (e.g. for which application can you not use Mentimeter?).
This video (5:31 min) shows 5 ways to engage and interact with students, using multiple choice questions, word cloud, likert scale, open ended questions and de quiz feature.

The VU has a contract and a data processing agreement with the supplier. These contain all kinds of provisions that prohibit the supplier from using personal data of VU employees and VU students for their own purposes (such as reselling). There are also a variety of security agreements in the agreement about when employees of the supplier may view data (almost never) that enters the application and what the supplier must do to minimize the chance that third parties can view or change data.
The supplier provides institutions such as the VU with an administrator dashboard. This allows the VU to enforce all kinds of settings on the VU users, which makes the tool a lot more secure.
To guarantee the privacy and security, of teachers and students, it is important that you use this tool with a VU account instead of a private account.
