VU-specific FAQ
Questions regarding the setup of an assignment with Ouriginal plagiarism checker
+ Is it Urkund or Ouriginal?
+ What does the checkbox anonymous mean?
Also note that this setting for anonymization in Ouriginal will not hide student information in the Canvas Speed Grader (the standard grading tool for Canvas). Canvas offers its own setting for anonymization in the Assignment settings (called ‘Anonymous grading’: “Graders cannot view student names”)
+ What does the Show report to students option mean?
+ Do I need to download any software in order to use Ouriginal
+ Which type of file formats does Ouriginal support?
Questions regarding the interpretation of the analysis report
+ I cannot open the plagiarism report. What's wrong?
1. A person without VUnet-ID, someone who login into Canvas with a personal emailadress.
2. A person connected to Amsterdam UMC.
If you belong to one of these groups please contact a colleague (with VUnet- ID) to share the reports by PDF with you.
If you don't belong to one of the groups and are not able to access the plagiarism report please contact your faculty support.
+ I would like to get an overview of percentage scores of all submitted documents whithin my course
+ A certain percentage of similarities is found. How can I tell if this is a case of plagiarism?
+ The analysis report shows WARNINGS, wat does this mean?
Note that false positives may also be found here. For instance, if mathematical symbols are used in a physics paper, these may trigger a warning as well.
Also note that these warnings do not add to the percentage of similarities found.
+ How does Ouriginal deal with ‘self-plagiarism’ (similarities found in texts that are submitted by the same student)?
However, if a document is submitted twice, using different email addresses then this will be included in the analysis report.Hence, it’s key to check the analysis report thoroughly.
If a teacher submits a document from their connected email address to the same assignment in the Canvas course, then this will be analyzed against all other documents currently in our database. This is to ensure teachers can submit all student documents from a specific assignment and can check them against all the submissions.
+ Where can I get help interpreting the analysis report?
+ I can not open the source file of a matched previously submitted student document, what's wrong?
Questions regarding ownership of uploaded documents
+ What happens to the ownership of documents submitted to Ouriginal?
+ When a file is submitted to Ouriginal, where will it be stored?
The VU has a contract and a data processing agreement with the supplier. These contain all kinds of provisions that prohibit the supplier from using personal data of VU employees and VU students for their own purposes (such as reselling). There are also a variety of security agreements in the agreement about when employees of the supplier may view data (almost never) that enters the application and what the supplier must do to minimize the chance that third parties can view or change data.
Additionally, the VU enforced specific security settings to prevent other institutions or companies access to the VU data (student assignments and plagiarism reports).
